StartupBus comes to Tampa

8 Feb

Hackathon + Competition + Roadtrip
“12 buses of strangers traveling at 60 miles per hour have 48 hours to conceive, build and launch a startup and compete for venture capital funding.”

Tampa has been selected as the starting place for Florida’s StartupBus, a mobile incubator where entrepreneurial minds come together to create the next big thing. Buses will be leaving from 12 different cities in the U.S., all ending at Austin’s SXSW interactive technology conference, March 9 – 13 to compete for funding.

Last year’s Florida bus left from Miami, but more people on the bus were from Tampa than any other city. A project from Tampa, MyNewman.com, made the final six in the national competition.

The community was given the opportunity to select the starting locations for this year’s buses. Thanks to our local tech community, and lots of tweeting, Facebook posts and grassroots marketing, Tampa was selected as the starting place for Florida’s bus. We now have another opportunity. If Tampa Bay can secure enough funding, we can earn the right to have our own bus, just for Tampa Bay!

Greg Ross-Munro, conductor of this year’s bus, provided a recap of his experience from last year in Creative Tampa Bay’s Buzz.
